Pic of the Day – San Juan Worm

Had to get down and dirty on the Upper Manistee, with a slower than normal couple days of trout fishing.  Had to bust out all the tricks.  Have honestly not thrown the worm, the san juan worm, since my Colorado days some 15 years ago.  Used to fish the worm on the Upper Colorado River on my days off.

On the wish list – Northern Lights

Great video of the Northern Lights in AK, this is on my bucket list for sure someday.

Technicolour Alaska from Alexis Coram on Vimeo.

There are some things in this world that everyone deserves to experience with their own eyes. I headed to Alaska in February with the hope of catching a glimpse of the Northern Lights with mine. That glimpse turned into an extravaganza…a party in the sky, and I was an onlooker, a face in the crowd…awestruck, mesmerized, feeling like the luckiest girl in the world. Night after night I was captivated by bright and colorful lights dancing wistfully above me; a graceful representation of the light in my soul. These were enchanted nights like I've never experienced. And while my camera captured a play-by-play of the spectacle, I could be found dog sledding through snow-covered forests, relaxing by the fire in a toasty cabin, or simply laying down in the snow and drifting into the dance.

This was the most amazing trip of my life so far…and here it is, summarized in under 3 minutes. This is my first time time lapse film, so it means a lot that you're here, reading this, stepping into a very special piece of my past.
Thank you. x

Happy Angler putting on a Sharkwave

One of my favorite little stickers.  Means new fly lines.  Stringing up the new 5wt Skarkwave Trout and GPX for the 2014 season.  Can’t wait for the dry fly.  Current BWO’s and Little Black Stones.  But Russ Maddin reported the first Henny of the year.  We are so close!

Picture of the Day – Jumping Brown Trout

jumping brown troutSometimes it is better to be lucky , had the camera at ready for some reason at the right time for this jumping brown trout.  Love the spraying water effect.  Feel free to click on the photo and you will go to my Smug Mug page as well, to see a larger size.

A Mangled Stonefly for Mangled Fly

Our big rivers are flooded right now, but the smaller creeks have cleared and there is a lot of life above and below the water. A lot of the stoneflies that typically emerge in February and March are just now hatching and the fish and predatory insects love to eat them. This is a water strider eating a tiny winter stonefly, taken March 16.

Sharkwave from SA.

SharkWave: A New Category of Fly Line from Scientific Anglers on Vimeo.

SharkWave is more than just another fly line. It’s an entirely new category. Its triple-textured design makes it float higher, shoot farther, track more accurately, and last longer. It’s fishing. Friction-free.

Special thanks to the Pig Farm Ink crew for courageously agreeing to appear and to Sage Lion Media for putting this together.

Got Water? We do!

If you have been on any of the social networks in the past 24 hours I’m sure your sick of the flood stage, high water, USGS graphs.  But figured if you had not seen it yet, here is my little part to my little area that is overflowing.

Here is Tippy Dam, with the flood gates on over drive: (thank you Lance for the pic)

tippy_flood tippy_spill_wayHere is the Handicap Ramp if you have fished below Tippy, you have a perceptive of how this normally looks, just to say the river is high is an understatement.

Next are three graphs that all are related, they show the water that is headed to Tippy.  The Pine River and the Upper Manistee (Sherman) have water flow gauges.  Showing the levels.  The first graph is Manistee River at Sherman, where flood stage is normally 2400cfs, this morning it is running just under 3500cfs and looks that it could crest here shortly.  Just under 4000 cfs, a new record!  The little yellow triangles are normal flow over a 17 year average for this time of year.  As you can see yet again we have water this spring to play with.

Tippy Dam Graph.  Reaching 6500 yesterday for a short period in time.  Way too unsafe to fish from a boat!tippy_dam

It’s not fishing – crazy Mtn bike video

So I see this and I see how far I need to come with the camera and the editing.  But watching this video inspires me to work harder.  Great work here by the riders and the camera crew!

Mangled Fly Hats – Coming Soon

Mangled Fly Hat

Happy to announce that Mangled Fly Hats are coming soon.  Working with ATS printing.  Ask for Kallee, she does an amazing job.  Will post when the hats come in.  We will have two different styles to start.  Trucker and more traditional both with the Mangled Fly Logo.
