Trip to Alaska
Mangled Fly is pleased too announce in 2022 we will be hosting a Trip to Alaska, our destination will be Anglers Alibi . I for one can not wait to see first hand where guide Jeff Topp calls home for the summer. After hearing countless stories about his experiences it was an easy decision to host a trip. I look forward to fishing one of the best rainbow trout fishery’s in the world.
Trip Details

September 7-14, 2022
Wednesday to Wednesday
$5600 per person.
Fly into Anchorage the night before. Guests will fly from Anchorage to King Salmon via private charter. The branch river air service will pick us up from and fly us to Anglers Alibi.

Lodging
This is the fishing trip most folks visualize when they think of Alaska, big rainbows and silver salmon. Even better…we won’t be roughing it. Anglers Alibi’s Alaskan lodge accommodations are comfortable fabric cabin structures that will serve as your home base, complete with carpeted wood floors, electricity, heat and daily housekeeping service.There are 2 full guest shower rooms and a separate one for the staff. The hot water is unlimited, coming from their on demand hot water heater. There are 3 flush commodes for the camp guests and one for dedicated for the staff. They provide laundering services on a daily basis to all guests. There is a phone at camp, and they also have a satellite phone for our fly-out fishing trips and as a back up for emergencies. If for any reason there was a medical emergency, there is a doctor within a 30 minute flight from camp. Their camp is surrounded by an electric fence, so you can rest assured knowing you will not have any 4-legged friends outside your tent.
Rainbows Trout
Fishing for rainbow trout with Angler’s Alibi is a season long endeavor, the guides stay focus on this fishery year round. Their trout fishing focuses on not only their home river, but they fly-out to many trout streams in nearby Katmai National Park and the famous Kvichak River. Fly outs are an extra cost, but highly recommended by Jeff. I personally have fished the Moraine with Jeff and it’s a very special place. Guests will split the cost of the fly-out, the lodge doesn’t take any cut. Guests will pay the Branch River Air Service directly.
Anglers Alibi’s guides are always trying to fish for the largest trout possible throughout the season but also putting their guests in areas with huge populations of wild rainbows that are amazing fighters even at the 20” range. The home water’s of the Lodge are right on the Alagnak River, a world class rainbow trout river, so many days will be spent minutes from the cabins. Guests will load up in jet boats and drive to where the hot fishing spots are.
Fishing for rainbows will be our main focus on this trip with a chance at finding a fish in the 30′ range. Tactics will include streamers, mousing, and the ever reliable egg fishing. These rainbows fest on the abundant amount of eggs in the river systems from the salmon that have been spawning thru out the summer. Also expect to be swinging flesh flies on this trip, as the big boys love to eat the meat of the dying salmon too.
Silver Salmon
Silver Salmon are also known as “Coho Salmon” and are the most acrobatic of all Pacific salmon species. Most Coho’s spend the first few moments after the hook up in the air. These Coho’s average about 8 – 10 pounds with larger ones in the high teens in the Alagnak River.
The peak fishing season for silver salmon on the Alagnak River occurs any time in the month of August, with some peak days still in September. Several factors such as weather, ocean conditions, and river temperatures affect the run and the “bite” with the fish that are in the river. Our focus is not on Silvers for this trip, but the opportunity should be there for these prized gamefish. Anglers are allowed to bring some Coho Salmon home after their trip.
What I enjoyed most about my past experiences fishing with Jeff Topp in Alaska before was the diversity of fishery. I highly recommend fishing for these Salmon for a few days on your trip, if the opportunity presents it’s self.
After Fishing
After a day of fishing the Main Lodge at Anglers Alibi’s looks to be a great place to relax. I’m sure we will be looking forward to warming up and consume a few calories. With an 18 foot dining table, there is plenty of room for all the great food on the menu. No doubt this looks to be a great place to hang out and tell fishing stories.
