Picture of the Day – Cast at Twilight

There are a handful of fishy activities that I enjoy trying to caputre with the lens of a camera.  One of them is the art of the fly cast.  With the sun only above the banks of the river, and shining only on the face and rod of the angler.  The fly line is highlighted in full display as the angler makes one more cast before it’s time to head in.

I often get asked why I like to fly fish.  It’s the cast.  Plan and simple.

Holy Cow I can’t believe I got that on film

Video is shot in 1080 HD will take a second to load fully.  Enjoy.

Late Sept and early Oct is prime time for Muskie

After last years trip, had to sneak out between salmon/steelhead trips and find a couple more Musky to play with this past week.  They are the biggest baddest predator that we have here in the Midwest.  They are a special fish and I love the chase.  With possible new laws and the MDNR working hard to find new waters to plant Musky in, the future looks bright.

Picture of the Day – First King of the Year

Ed McCoy finding one that would eat a streamerIt’s a challenge that I have always enjoyed since the first time I tried it 8 or 9 years ago, throwing streamers for Kings.  With this years temps, the challenge has stepped up a notch.  Usually first King of the year for me (and my boat) is hooked and landed in Aug, so this year we are a step or two behind my usual pace.  But Ed McCoy got us on the board, and look for the next wave of fish to bring us back to our normal pace.

New Order of MFM Sweatshirts on the way

One of my favorite pieces of clothing in the fall and winter is a hoodie sweatshirt.  Having not being blessed with a full head of hair, keeping my head and neck warm in the fall is a must.  After trying so many different companies sweatshirts, (personal R&D) this hoodie was the best I found.  Have a new order of MFM sweatshirts on the way, so if you want one for fall just let me know or order online here

With yesterday’s rain and tomorrow nights low of 44 I can taste fall is on the way.  Been casting at Salmon, Coho, and even a couple steelhead the past couple days.  With 70 degree water temps they are not very aggressive towards the fly.  But life is about to change, I can feel it.

AEG Highlight Video

More Alaska – Dolly

Dave with a nice Dolly with guide Jeff Topp.  Been working on the highlight roll and came upon this photo.  This was one of our fly out days from Katmai Lodge, very special little river.  Thank you Jeff for sharing this with us.  Hope to have some sort of finalized video done in a month or so.  Will post a blog when it’s finished.

Picture was shot with my GoPro H2, it is actually a still shot from video that I took of this fish being held.  Amazing what you can do with “command, shift, 4” on a mac.

Alaskan Favorite – Picture of the Day

Have about 25 favorites from the close to 1000 pictures I took over the week in AK.  Here is one of them, other than the mangled fly in a fishes mouth.  Capturing the flight, or aerial display of a jumping fish.  In this case a silver salmon, is one of my passions with the camera.  It is not easy to say the least, but now with all the practice I hope to be ready for fall steelhead.  The real reason why I bought a Canon 7D, give me speed to capture these types of photos.  Hope you enjoy.

Alaskan Adventure – more to come soon

Just getting back to MI, after spending the past week with Jeff Topp at Katmai Lodge in Alaska.  We had an amazing week of fishing, silvers, rainbows, dolly’s, chum, and pink salmon counting for the majority of our catch.  I have over a 1000 pictures, hours of video, and am hoping to put something special together in the coming weeks.  If you have not fished Alaska yet, or your looking for a new experience you owe it to yourself to fish with Mike Maher and Jeff Topp at the Katmai Lodge.
