Picture of the Day – Cast at Twilight

There are a handful of fishy activities that I enjoy trying to caputre with the lens of a camera.  One of them is the art of the fly cast.  With the sun only above the banks of the river, and shining only on the face and rod of the angler.  The fly line is highlighted in full display as the angler makes one more cast before it’s time to head in.

I often get asked why I like to fly fish.  It’s the cast.  Plan and simple.

Picture of the Day – First King of the Year

Ed McCoy finding one that would eat a streamerIt’s a challenge that I have always enjoyed since the first time I tried it 8 or 9 years ago, throwing streamers for Kings.  With this years temps, the challenge has stepped up a notch.  Usually first King of the year for me (and my boat) is hooked and landed in Aug, so this year we are a step or two behind my usual pace.  But Ed McCoy got us on the board, and look for the next wave of fish to bring us back to our normal pace.

Fall is getting closer and this video just got me a little bit excited.

WHERE THE WILD FISH ARE from Bobby Foster on Vimeo.

Finally! Just Ordered mine!

Just received a very cool email and had to share that Go Pro has launched a dive kit for there Go Pro line of camera’s.  Ever have your underwater images or video not turn out just right.  Was your image a little fuzzy?  Well here is the answer!  Here is a link GoPro.com – just look under premium accessories .  I will be posting video of the new housing shortly after it arrives.  But I’m sure it has fixed the problem of fuzzy underwater imagery.

Toys from 2011

One of the things that kinda bugs me about the new reviews that come out this time of year , are the listing of items at are “new”, and they write a review about them.  Stating how cool they are, how well they work, and how they changed the game.  Really how do they know?  2012 has not even happened yet.  So what I wanted to do, is talk a couple items that changed the way I took photo’s, video’s, and fished in 2011.  The products that made the cut, and I’ll use again in 2012.  While this was a spur of the moment post.  Come back to it, I might add a couple things.

GoPro Camera

By far the most fun I had in 2011 with “new stuff” was with my GoPro.  These little camera are amazing.  And now with the new GoPro2 coming out.  Some of the little problems that the GoPro has, (the fact you need to carry directions with you at all times) will be resolved.  Durability, light weight, 1080 video, size, and creative angles. Are what make the GoPro one of my favorite toys.

Suction Cup Mount

One of the best toys from 2011 was the GoPro, but one of the best accessories that I purchased was the Suction Cup Mount, that is found on the Motor Sports Edition.  Their are endless applications to this mount.  And what was best about this accessory is that it really did stick.  The large suction cup was powerful enough to support the GoPro and you believed in it’s holding power.  Nobody wants to lose their GoPro.

Extreme Skagit Head

While this product did not make it into my hands until the end of the year.  It did change the way that I could teach new and experienced anglers how to fish.  SA listened to the guides and reps and came out with an Intermediate line that was extremely fishy, and gave anglers new to the art of spey casting the ability to make the cast needed to catch fish.  Go to SA for more details.   But this line in two months in the fall was the cat’s meow of swing lines, and will continue to be a go to favorite in the boat.

See Spot Swim

Question of the day, why do some steelhead have more freckles than other steelhead?  This buck at last count has a couple hundred.  There is really no answer to this question, but I thought this was a good shot of a great migratory michigan rainbow, catching his breath before release back into the Manistee River.

Great Week for the Streamer

With water temps, river level, and an abnormal amount of big fish around.  Streamer fishing for steelhead has been really good.  While not the “how many” method of steelhead fishing, streamer fishing for them gives you honestly the best opportunity at targeting the big boys.  While just like brown trout fishing, when you throw the bigger meal you can pretty much count on the alpha male being the most interested party.  Couple pictures below of a great week of streamer fishing on the Big Manistee in Northern Michigan.

1st day hunting chrome and I forgot one thing

A short video from my first couple hours swinging flies for 2011.  Did make a mental note to next time trim my tags a little tighter on the custom sinktips.  Oh well.  Win some and today I lost one!
